Birch in Space displays Stephens’ interest in the natural world and the result of human intervention through appropriation. One singular aesthetic form is made up of eight separate casts from a piece of Birch tree, acquired during an artist’s residency in Iceland. On scrutiny, tiny grooves and fissures pit the surface of the branch alongside deeper indentations and knobbles left by smaller branches casting minute shadows within the sculpture, which otherwise has a clearly articulated or closed form. Stripped back to its essential form, this linear golden branch glistens within the space making reference to a single mark on a blank page.
