Des Hughes: Work is a Four Letter Word

20 August - 4 September 2022
Overview
'Work is a Four Letter Word’, is a solo exhibition of textile works, painting and sculpture by British artist Des Hughes, held at St Peter’s Church in Redlynch, Bruton.

In this body of work, Hughes explores how casual and subconscious mark-making can be made permanent, both drawn and sculpted, while retaining the immediacy and charm of their first attempt. In this process, Hughes engages with notions of work and labour, utilising humour to critique various forms of visual communication around these themes as well as further ones of faith, grief and healing. His works are thoughtfully placed in relation to the Grade II listed church’s interior and architecture.

Des Hughes (born 1970, Birmingham) completed an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London in 2002, following a BA in Fine Art at Bath College of Art in 1994. He has exhibited in many institutions including, Nottingham Contemporary (2010)  Manchester Art Gallery (2013) The Henry Moore Foundation, Perry Green, UK (2014) and The Hepworth Wakefield, UK (2015- 2016) and his work is held in major collections including Arts Council Collection, The Hepworth, Wakefield, The David Roberts Foundation and Manchester Art Gallery.
