Des Hughes, along with artist Clare Woods, have been selected to take part in The Roberts Institute of Art Residency in 2025.
The Roberts Institute of Art (RIA) is a non-profit contemporary arts organisation who commission performance art, run a residency programme and collaborate with national partners on exhibitions to research and share the David and Indrė Roberts Collection.
RIA invites international artists to their residency in Scotland to support their practice, offering time and space without the pressures of production. A unique aspect of the RIA Residency is being responsive to the specific needs and aims of the residents on a case-by-case basis, which they develop through research and dialogue with each resident. RIA aim to provide creatively stimulating conditions for residents to explore ideas, materials and projects. During their stay, residents will be connected with practitioners from different disciplines, as well as with Scotland’s rich cultural field.
There is no requirement for residents to use their time to produce a ‘finished work’: RIA's priority is to enable residents to think and create freely, try out different forms of expression. Together with partner organisations in Scotland, they explore how best to publicly present their time in residence, including through talks, podcasts and texts.
While in residence, Des will make the most of having the time and space to gather ideas and materials in the local environment to explore sites and draw on resources in the Dundee area. A unique opportunity to reflect on his practice, the residency will offer Des the chance to develop possible new directions in his work.
Des' residency will take place in June 2025.
