‘I found energy from somewhere very deep’: Alexis Soul-Gray talks to The Art Newspaper about navigating the gallery scene through grief and motherhood

Gallery artist Alexis Soul-Gray has been featured in The Art Newspaper discussing joining Bo Lee and Workman and her first solo show with the gallery. Interviewed by Anny Shaw, Alexis talks about navigating being an artist and mother, the impact of losing her UK gallery representation at a crucial moment in her career, and how the support from Bo Lee and Workman has allowed to work on her own terms.

Memory Play features eleven new canvases by the artist, which explore nostalgia and grief, were created by piecing together found images as a starting point. The Horse Whisperer, 2024 features some young children posing next to a chained-up bear and this painting came from an image Alexis bought on eBay: “I do not know where they are, but they are supposed to be having fun,” she says. “I will quite often be drawn to an image for reasons my conscious mind is not always immediately aware of—in this instance it is the bear and the children’s unease that is relevant, because I remember seeing a chained bear on holiday as a child and feeling a deep sense of sadness.”
