Mirror is Manchester based artist Lindsey Bull’s first solo exhibition in a public funded gallery. The exhibition premieres a new body of work created for the show, exploring performance, fashion and gender.
The paintings explore multiple transformations of self and collective identities with clothing imparting knowledge and meaning – a signifier of self and identity. Within the paintings figures are sometimes grouped, sometimes singular. At times the figure’s gender is indeterminate, perhaps androgynous. There is a strength and also a vulnerability to the figures, directly looking at the viewer at times but often turned away and gazing into a mysterious interior world.
